I am posting photos of this individual and another in hopes of clarifying the wing venation, as discussed in this post. These photos were taken shortly after the referenced post on another shrub further along the trail. These flies were also nectaring on California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum). I couldn't get close to these, so the photos have been enlarged, but I think you can see the veins well enough. It looks to me like vein R4 does have an appendix in this individual, at least in the top wing in this photo.
