Mexican Honey Wasps - Brachygastra mellifica

Mexican Honey Wasps - Brachygastra mellifica
South of Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas, USA
February 21, 2008
Size: 2.5 ft in diameter
Shot at Cooks Slough Wetlands just S. of Uvalde, Texas. Unfortunately, the city deemed it "dangerous" and had them removed.

Mexican Honey Bees
While visiting family in the San Antonio area I spotted a huge hive in the neighbors tree. Good to know it isn't as dangerous as we thought.

Honey wasps
In Argentina there is another genusPolybia that also makes honey. It is delicious, I have eaten it a number of times. But you have to spit out the paper.

Not paper wasps
I'm no expert but I know they aren't paper wasps. I'm guessing that they are some kind of yellow jacket? They have strange markings, I'm also wondering if they could be Mexican Honey Wasps (which I guess is a paper wasp after all. Ha! Shows how much I know! See .

interesting...
Ya know, after looking at the original photo at 100%, you're right. It is Mexican Honey Wasps..thanks!
