flies on cactus - Stictomyia longicornis

flies on cactus - Stictomyia longicornis
Austin, Wild Connections, Travis County, Texas, USA
April 27, 2006
Size: approx. 5 mm
I think these may be Stictomyia, as they come close, but do not match any of the images here in the guide already in this family. They do match the illustrations in Bio. Centrali Americana, including the wing patterns and the white on the front legs. They don't do cool things with their wings like some of the pictured-wing flies do. Instead, they just chased each other around a lot. Found on prickly pear cactus.

Stictomyia longicornis
Stictomyia longicornis - yare right! No doubts. The most incredible thing is that the other cactus dweller, Notogramma, acts the same way. But they are verrrrrrrrrry distantly related...

Moved from Picture-winged Flies. good find.
