Euxoa trifasciata

Euxoa trifasciata
Eddy Mountains, 3,650', Siskiyou County, California, USA
August 7, 2019
Size: FW = ~18.25 mm
I think this is Euxoa trifasciata, arttracted to light. PNW shows a pinned image that matches this moth quite well, especially when compared with the hindwing shot. This moth's claviform spot is extreamly weak but a very weak claviform spot seems normal for this species. All lines and hindwing details are a good match, as is the darker costa with its light spots towards the end. PNW and MPG show this species in my area, we have the right habitat, and our elevation is in the range listed at PNW.

Moved
Moved from Owlet Moths. Moving this here tentatively. Everything seems right for trifasciata except for the elevation at this location. According to MONA Fascicle 27-2, this species is typically found at 6000' to 9000'. However, I cannot find anything else that matches your moth.

6,000'
Hey, Steve - from my place, it's just 1.7 miles as the crow flies to 6,000' and the ridge to the south tops out at just over 9,000'. PNW moths lists this species as low as 3,554' and says it flies at "middle to high elevations". Thanks for taking a look!

PNW Moths
That PNW Moths elevation range makes me feel pretty good about this placement. Hard to believe that I never noticed those elevation ranges on the PNW Moths website before!
