Pollenia rudis? - Pollenia rudis - male

Pollenia rudis? - Pollenia rudis - Male
Presidio, Dragonfly Creek, San Francisco County, California, USA
July 30, 2019
Size: ca 8 mm
Caught in Malaise trap 26 Jul - 3 Aug 2019. A calyptrate fly that appears to be Pollenia with lots of yellow-white hairs on the thorax? Assuming the genus is correct, I keyed it to P. rudis using the Jewiss-Gaines pictorial key - no hairs on underside of wing at Sc-humeral cross vein (photo), couplet 2 difficult for me, but vagabunda not expected in CA, lappets of posterior spiracle clearly orange, presutural anterior supra-alar seta present (photo) despite facial carina not particularly prominent, mid-tibia with two antero-dorsal setae (photo).

Thanks John! I understand there may be several reasons for making anonymous contributions to BG and I appreciate your obvious knowledge of this family. But it would be helpful if you're willing to share your full name, since this helps folks evaluate your expertise and gives me something to write on a det. label, even if the IDs are tentative or qualified.

I'm just a Naturalist
Hello Ken,

I'm not seeking anonymity or fame. I just love Pollenia. I leave the recognition to the experts. I accredit Dr. Rognes for my knowledge of Pollenia. I fortify that knowledge with my own examinations and dissections. My username at diptera.info is johnes81 so i want to be consistent is all. I've added my name to my BG profile for you. I hope that you have a splendid day.

Best wishes,
John

Thanks John!!
Thanks John!!

ps
By the way, this is a male.

okay rudis
I will agree with P. rudis because of 2 ad mid tibia, f3 and f2 lacking golden hairs, abdominal vestiture appears to be black, the basicosta is yellow/brown and you state that the wing does not have a tuft of pale hairs. pediculata is very easy to id: https://diptera.info/photogallery.php?photo_id=10761

P.vagabunda has a diagnostic undusted dark presutural stripe between the ac(Rognes 1991). https://bugguide.net/node/view/1353608/bgimage

Best wishes,
John
