Gulf Fritillary Butterfly egg laying - Agraulis incarnata - female

Gulf Fritillary Butterfly egg laying - Agraulis incarnata - Female
Griffith Park, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 8, 2019
Size: 3 to 4 inch wingspan
Walking in a sparsely visited corner of the park, I first noticed the presence of several Gulf Fritillaries, then spotted a dense growth of Bluecrown Passionflower vines. Though dozens of Fritillaries were visiting the vines and brush, there did not appear to be any nearby flowering plants for them to settle on and feed from. This made photography difficult, as they were rarely still. Patience paid off when this lucky shot caught a female Gulf Fritillary delicately depositing an egg on a thread-like Passionflower vine.

Moved to Agraulis vanillae - Gulf Fritillary
