Crater-making ant - Dorymyrmex bureni

Crater-making ant - Dorymyrmex bureni
Hobe Sound, Florida, USA
February 20, 2008
Size: 3 mm
These ants made craters 9-12 cm across, 3 cm tall.

Moved
Moved from Pyramid Ants.

Dorymyrmex sp. - worker (Dolichoderinae)
My first insight was related genus Forelius, but this one ant is too slender and leggy.

Dorymyrmex bureni
Right subfamily, Richard, but this one is Dorymyrmex bureni and is indeed the builder of the crater-like pile of excavated material in John's other image.

To complete the circle
... for other readers, this is the image of the crater-like pile to which James is referring:.
Thanks for your help, James and Charley!

Thanks James
I wonder if this one is also identifiable?

Dorymyrmex flavus
That is the more western, and closely related species D. flavus, recognized by being slightly more shiny, and its more narrow head and angular mesonotal profile, all detectable in this photo.

In my experience, D. bureni does not occur west of the Mississippi River.

Thanks again
