Hodges #7905 - Datana major? - Datana major
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
August 11, 2019
Size: Length ≈27mm
Attracted to black light. I am at a loss with this Datana. I probably can rule out D. major and D. drexelii on account of the absence of shading of the lines but realize that this feature is not always present, and for D. angusii my moth is not dark enough and seems not to have scalloped outer margins. According to MPG, there are three species without shaded lines that might occur in this area, D. ministra, D. perspicua and D. ranaeceps, but they have pale hindwings, Which Datana might my moth be then??

Datana major
After consulting MPG's spread specimen page I realize that the essentially identical basic color of hindwing and forewing of my moth is what distinguishes Datana major from all other Datana I can expect to encounter at my location.
