Cameraria caryaefoliella or Ectoedemia trinotata? I forget how to distinguish between the mines of these--I am leaning toward Cameraria, but the shape was more elongated like the Ectoedemia mines I've seen...

The initial linear portion is there, it's just highly contorted. There is a semicircular exit slit at the other end of the mine.

Well,
E. trinotata should start with a narrow linear portion, but Cameraria pupates in the mine, so I'm confused by what I'm seeing here...
Also note that Carya ovalis is a new host species for Coptodisca. There is a hickory-feeding species in Georgia with a barcode distinct from that of C. lucifluella, and it's possible it occurs in NC...
