Moth, yes
What was the host plant? Interesting feeding pattern.

Gee willickers!
My copy of Tracks & Signs of Insects just came in today. I saw a preview of it online and was utterly rapt. What an amazing concept and treasure trove it is. Everything about the book is beautiful, starting with the cover and the lovely quote above the copyright. I've barely begun reading, but I am finding the language delightfully accessible, and, of course, the photographs, breathtaking. I always love a new book, but it's been a long time since I've been just tickled pink as I am with yours.
The plant is here Ambrosia trifida, and UPDATE, the moth, just ID'ed by local entomologist, is Adaina ambrosiae (Pterophoridae).

Ah, it does look like a plume moth--that makes sense
Glad you're enjoying the book!
I'm making a note of this feeding pattern in case I ever get around to doing a second edition.

Thank you
I'll be paying more attention to our ragweed now.
I do hope there will be a second edition of the book at some point, as it is such a fascinating and relevant study. I was very fortunate to have met bugguide's supergroovy, extra kind "metrioptera" (Brandon Woo), who told me that Tracks & Signs is a must-have, and I see how right he is.
I wasn't even aware that bugguide had a tracks and signs section until you commented on the moth image and I looked up your profile. Thank you for the amazing work you are doing. Your pages and articles on this site are quite interesting and a joy to read.
