stylopids - Xenos peckii - male

stylopids - Xenos peckii - Male
Brookside Gardens, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
August 20, 2019
Size: 5.5mm
male stylopid pupae parasitizing a male Polistes. Given the genus of the host wasp, I think these stylopids are in the genus Xenos. The wasp appears to be P. fuscatus; the host specificity stated by Kathirithamby and Taylor (1) suggests that the stylopids are X. pecki.

TIA

(It would be interesting to try to keep a host wasp in captivity until the stylopids eclosed but I have no idea of how long the pupation period is or what to feed the wasp)

edit: added a dorsal photo of the host wasp in case I got the species ID wrong

Pupation period
"after a 10-day to 15-day pupation period, the winged male (F) emerges, locates a receptive female (G), and mates." per "Hrabar, Michael & Danci, Adela & Mccann, Sean & Schaefer, P.W. & Gries, G. (2014). New findings on life history traits of Xenos peckii (Strepsiptera: Xenidae). The Canadian Entomologist."

Also keeping paper wasps is easy. I kept a pet colony for a year. Adults only need water and a sugar source. If you have a colony they need protein for the brood. I've currently got 2 P.fuscatus that have Xenos sp. in them that I am keeping alive to see if they eclose.

thanks for the info
I'll give it a try if I catch another one.
