Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve, Los Angeles County, California, USA
August 22, 2019
Size: 1 to 2 cm. approx.
Visiting a fragrant Fennel plant, I found many small bees and wasps, but also two larger wasps of a brick red color with dark brown to black wings. These tended to remain on the upper blossoms, six to seven feet high. Constant movement made a clear photograph difficult, though I tried repeatedly over several minutes. The most similar wasp I have seen is the Rusty Spider Wasp - Tachypompilus ferrugineus. I am hoping that enough is visible here for an identification.
