Moved
Moved from Red-spotted Purple.

Lorie, how did you seperate this specimen
from a Viceroy which appears similar and uses willow as host plant? The small humps indicate Viceroy to me.

Good question and one I hope
Good question and one I hope to have a definitive answer on soon as I brought it in to rear. I apologize in posting the picture prematurely after I realized how similar the species were. We have significantly more red spotted purples and rarely a viceroy. Shall I remove this picture? I am assuming it should emerge in a few more days. I planned to tag the adult with the larva and move if necessary.

Wow that's great if you are waiting for eclose.
I've reared Viceroys but never a Red-spotted Purple. Hopefully it ecloses safely. No need to move the image.

It's a Viceroy!
Cliff, it eclosed today and it is a Viceroy, surprise surprise;) I've moved the pic and tagged the other photos to go with it. Thanks for your help and patience:)

nice picture series
happy butterflying
