This is a common ankle-biter on our shaded porch. Oak-grassland interface, c. 5,020' elev., SE Huachuca Mts. Butterfly garden, on Arizona milkweed.

Feeding behavior
Per Info tab above--adults feed on primate blood. Therefore, it's interesting to see an adult with its proboscis thrust into the nectar receptacle (horn) of the milkweed.

 
Primate blood
Needed for egg development. Adults (both male and female) feed on nectar though to keep themselves going. Males feed exclusively on nectar, females only for energy. Blood nutrients is almost exclusively for the eggs, so the female doesn't get much out of that.
