Unknown Mayfly - Hexagenia bilineata

Unknown Mayfly - Hexagenia bilineata
Lafayette, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA
July 19, 2019
This individual came to the MV lights around 1 am. I used to have a number of Mayfly species breeding in my backyard pond. However, in recent years I have not found any larvae. I am assuming this came from the stream in the woods across the road from my property. I am curious to what group or species it is to know if it prefers still or moving water.

Hexagenia bilineata
Hi Barb-

I believe this female imago to be Hexagenia bilineata. They prefer still water, where they are able to construct a u-shaped tunnel, and normally depart from it only during hours of darkness in order to feed.

Thank you Roger. That is helpful. I will resume my search next spring/summer and this time trying to observe the larvae at night.
