Cottonwood Stag Beetle grub - Lucanus mazama

Cottonwood Stag Beetle grub - Lucanus mazama
Orem, Utah County, Utah, USA
July 27, 2019
Size: about 57 mm long
found in the composted wood pieces in a play ground. Thought to be a 3rd stage grub. I found most about 4-6 inches from the surface.
Lucanus mazama

Moved to Lucanus mazama.
Moved from Stag Beetles.

Moved to Lucanidae for expert identification.
Moved from Beetles.

I have no idea if larvae are identifiable or not. Knowing the that the host is cottonwood might help.

grub ID
Ken, We actually know this is a Lucanus mazama grub. I posted it so a grub picture could be filed with the adult pictures. It since has pupated and I am going to post that picture also.

question
Did you post any pictures of the teneral imago? If so, could you link them? I'm asking this because your picture is of a female third instar larva with a clearly visible ovary. It is the yellow patch below the 7th segment. I can also see a few fresh faecal pellets. They are the result of a reflexive reaction to disturbance. Great picture.

Sorry!
When you're sure of an id, just go ahead and put it under the species where it belongs, John. No need to go through the ID Request page.

How
Could you teach me how to do that?

Uploading photos
Instead of clicking on ID Request, put the insect's name in the Search box at the top right of the page, click on Search. It'll take you to a page full of images whose data contain the name you have put in. When you get to the species page you want, click on "Images" and then "Add image". This will bring up the same "Submit image" page that you filled out for "ID Request". After that, it's the same except that now the image is on the species page.
Feel free to ask me more if you have trouble with my instructions!

thanks
Ken, I tried that and it worked well. Thanks for your help and advice.
