Cabbage White - Pieris rapae - female

Cabbage White - Pieris rapae - Female
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
September 19, 2007
This is a female Cabbage White. You can tell by the two black dots on the inside of her forewings. A male specimen would have only one dot there, in roughly the same location as the larger of the two dots on the female.

She is exhibiting a defensive posture, as she is not interested in mating. With her wings spread out and abdomen held high, a male can't get close enough to her to initiate the mating ritual.
