Aphoebantus fumosus - male

Aphoebantus fumosus - Male
Piru, Ventura County, California, USA
March 4, 2008
This species is widespread throughout the SW US and NW Mexico, especially Baja CA. Another species, A. transitus, has smokey wing bases but is much larger. This guy ranges in size from about 3-5 mm, with some elvish outliers closer to 2 mm. Like most Aphoebantus, you rarely see these flies visiting flowers. Instead, you find them resting on the ground.

Andy - you may want to contact John VanDyk about getting editor status. This would let you make your own pages for the new species you shoot and add any distribution/identification/etc. information you want to the species pages.

Great images by the way.
