common buckeye - Junonia coenia - female

common buckeye - Junonia coenia - Female
Pachaug State Forest, Griswold, New London County, Connecticut, USA
September 1, 2019
One of four buckeyes seen this late afternoon in the same acre. The outer forewing is variable but I don't find it being listed as a diagnostic and their size difference is not easily determined. Ct. Butterfly Assoc. ranks common buckeye at an 'occasional' status, some years establishing small populations. Also had an observation of one buckeye which flew into the dense forest about a mile from here last weekend. More sightings than all other butterfly sp. combined this week!
