In the Vockeroth (1992) key for Melangyna, wing trichosity splits umbellatarum/lasiophthalma from arctica/labiatarum. The former are then split by the pattern of the frons, markings on the scutellum, color of the side of the thorax, etc. The latter are split by facial details.
