Catocala retecta/luctuosa? - Catocala angusi

Catocala retecta/luctuosa? - Catocala angusi
Plainfield, Hendricks County, Indiana, USA
September 2, 2019
Size: ~35 mm FW
Found at the I70 rest area eastbound. This moth tends to have all of the markings of C. retecta/luctuosa except for not having a bold PM line. I ruled out other black underwings for various reasons. C. flebilis has more of a continuous thick black patch that runs from basal area to apex. C. vidua consistently has a thick dark AM line, an obvious dark patch that runs from near the apex to costa and touching the reniform spot, and anal dashes below the ST line. C. Ulalume has a double PM line with lower one being thick and dark much like C. vidua, and also has pronounced anal dashes below the ST line. If this moth would have had a thicker/bolder PM line, I probably would have placed it directly under C. retecta/luctuosa.

Thanks!
Thanks Jonn! I ruled out C. angusi early because I had found it here in 2015 and the black patches were much more prominent. The same is true for almost all the images of angusi on BugGuide and MPG. But now I see with many of the images of angusi posted at BoldSystems that this is prob what I have here. Angusi solves my issue with the narrow AM line and the absence of anal dashes in the ST area.
