Common Lytrosis caterpillar - Lytrosis unitaria

Common Lytrosis caterpillar - Lytrosis unitaria
Albany, New Hampshire, USA
May 10, 2005
Size: 24mm
After looking at the picture, I realized how this caterpillar was able to stay horizontal to the ground. There's a silk line holding up it's butt.

What do you think about
Lytrosis unitaria, page 171 of Wagner? We flipped your image over 180 degrees and it looks like a good match.

Lytrosis unitaria
I agree, it's a match. It's amazing how the front 2 pairs of legs fold up, and are virtually invisible. I uploaded a larger image and removed the dust spots, making it easier to see.
You're doing great with Wagner's book, finding ones that I couldn't. Thanks for all the work.

We've actually started to print
the images from bugguide and have a set of them out as we page through Wagner, rotating them as necessary to match the images. It's amazing how many times you can page through without seeing the match. Though we're always humbled by remembering that Wagner only has images for 500 of the 10000 or so caterpillars!

Actually
The head end is sticking out :).

Good camoflage
It fooled me.
