odd Museum Beetle - Attagenus

odd Museum Beetle - Attagenus
University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, USA
February 27, 2008
Size: slightly under 1 cm.
This was found by my girlfriend's roommate. She was about to kill it, but my girlfriend stopped her & gave it to me knowing I'd want to see it.

I've seen dermestids before, and in fact we had them infesting our house for many years (then we tore out our carpeting).
But the ones I'm use to are a golden brown, not a coal gray/black.
I'm sure it's in this genus (http://bugguide.net/node/view/18119)

The name "Museum beetle" comes from their habit of destroying museum animal collections (like pinned insects or taxidermied animals).

Attagenus sp.
long silverfish-like body with long hairs on tail only. In Europe, we have one species in which larvae are almost black (remainder´s are orange) - so no problem . . .
