Like I said before about your photos of an adult of this species. A. polyphemus isn't located in your area this would be a A. oculea, which is extremely similar.

Taxonomic status ? I am confused.
According to the BGN comments I read; Robin MacLeod , i believe, sites that the genus has only one species & 3 subspecies. Another apparent problem: A. polyphemus isn't found in AZ & NV. There is some higher level clarification & direction needed.

I grant that my adult A. p. o. ?? showed significant color differences, especially re the eye development (size) and coloration on the forewing. The "Eastern" forms have very small & not very visible eye spots on the forewing.

 
A. oculea used to be consider
A. oculea used to be considered a subspecies of A. polyphemus, but it is now considered it's own species. There are two Antheraea species in the US. Here is the most basic website I can direct you to.
