Beetle found at truck stop south of Livingston, TX - Strategus aloeus - Female
About 5 miles south of Livingston, Polk County, Texas, USA
July 9, 2007
Size: About 1 1/2 inches long
I found this beetle while filling my gasoline tank at a truck stop south of Livingston, TX. I picked it up and put it in a styrofoam cup and carried it with me north to Nacogdoches, where I work. After I arrived and unloaded some things from my car, I reached for the cup resting in my cup holder. The beetle had torn a hole in the bottom of the cup and was lying underneath in the cup holder. I took it to a section of log on the patio and took some photos, then put it on the ground. The beetle immediately began to burrow into the dirt, like a submarine diving beneath the surface! I was shocked at its strength, having torn through the cup and now "diving" into the packed earth.
