Shiny Beetle with Mite Hitchhiker - Phaeaphodius rectus

Shiny Beetle with Mite Hitchhiker - Phaeaphodius rectus
Rowan's Ravine Provincial Park, Last Mountain Lake Area, Saskatchewan, Canada
August 24, 2019
Previously posted on iNaturalist.

We were swimming at the South swimming area on Rowan Ravine Provincial Park beach and saw the beetle struggling about 15-20 meters from shore, water was about 1meter deep. I captured it and walked out of the water to my bag and photographed it as it dried off.
I initially did not notice that it had a small mite hitchhiking on it.

Moved
Moved from Aphodius.

Moved
Thinking Phaeaphodius rectus but also Melinopterus prodromus; the former would be a range expansion.

Moved from Scarab Beetles.

rectus, agreed

Not a mite...
The hitchhiker is definitely not a mite. Might be a beetle larva of some kind...
