Moth 1185 - Ostrinia penitalis
Pymatuning Lake, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 3, 2006
I had identified this originally as Udea rubigalis but I am having second thoughts. It's missing the normally obvious orbicular and reniform spots as well as the line of spots near the terminal line. Had the AM and PM lines been equally faint and the fringe less intact, I would probably let it go. Found a couple images of Ostrinia penitalis that looked similar.

ID confirmed tentatively by Bob Patterson which he based on an ID by Brian Scholtens made for a nearly identical specimen.

Puzzler Without Hindwings -- Nice Photo!
This from Brian Scholtens: "Looks like Ostrinia, possibly penitalis. Can’t tell for certain without hindwings." I got to scratching my head over this one so I sent it to Brian. The forewing pattern fits a number of species, possibly even in more than one genus.

Moving To Ostrinia
For now, anyway. Sorry, no hindwings. I do have a side shot though and will post it shortly.

For what it is worth, I just pulled up another photo of the same moth and can see a zig-zag st line. It is visible in this photo as well but it is very faint. I'm becoming more convinced that O. penitalis may be right.

I should also point out that this moth came to a UV light and I either place him on a leaf on the ground or he flew there from the sheet.
