Northern Green-Striped Grasshopper - Chortophaga viridifasciata -

Size: ~17 mm

These are the first grasshoppers I have seen this year and I am pretty sure about the ID. They had pale yellow underwings and crepitated during flight. Also note the blue hind-leg. (And please correct me if I am off on this one...)

Looks correct--green phase

Looks correct--nice photo. Did you get any photos of the abdominal tip? Most of the green phase are supposed to be females and most of the brown phase males.

I've only seen brown phase, presumably males, so far this spring, but I haven't gotten out much with our "sunny all week, rainy all weekend" weather pattern lately.

I went through the photos and the abdomen is hidden in the grass in all of them. I'll try to see if I can get some more next week. I wondered if only the males crepitate though?

crepitation--females too

I think this is one of the ones where both sexes are said to crepitate in flight. I believe I just read that in a reference.

I still haven't seen a green one. Strange.
