I think this is an egg sac for praying mantis. I have several sitting in a clear container waiting for a spring hatch.

Thanks, Bill. I am keeping it in a safe protected place outside and we'll keep our eyes on it. If we get a hatch, I'll try to get some pictures of them when they emerge. Then of course I'll take them out to the perennials to disperse.
