Euphydryas chalcedona
I what it turns out to be.

Looks to be one of the Checkerspots
in the genus Chlosyne, see here, but we're still waiting for one of the butterfly experts to sort these out for us here.
We searched on the Caterpillar hostplant database for Nymphalids on Pedicularis and this was the result, if that helps.

Checkerspots
Thanks for the help in ID-ing these caterpillars. We have a lot of Checkerspots butterflies at the preserve so this would fit.

Thanks Richard

Is it one of the Euphydryas?
Do you know which one? It would be nice to get these ID'd to species.

Checkerspot Caterpillar
We have at least three different Checkerspots butterflies that I know of in the Glen Ellen area. They are the Northern Checkersopt (Chlosyne palla), Leanira Checkerspot (Thessalia leanira) and Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona). I will keep an eye this group of caterpillar and when one of them makes a pupa I will bring it back to the hall and let it emerge.

Richard

maybe
Off the top of my head, I'd say it's a Chlosyne or Thessalia (hostplant argues for leanira), but it will be interesting to learn for sure.
