On flowers of Lepidium fremontii. A male was seen nearby:

   

Scaeva pyrastri and Eupeodes volucris can easily be mistaken for one another. Females of the latter have a much larger black area on the vertex, and usually have a narrow yellow margin along the posterior edge of the scutellum:
