Size: couple inches?
It was crawling on the stem of a Joe Pye weed. There are several species in my caterpillar book with the green background and white stripes and spots. So I drew a blank.

It is beyond me to tell, but I appreciate both suggestions. For what it is worth, we have had adult Leuconycta diphteroides recorded here.

Crambodes prefers Verbena, has darker spiracles and a mottled head capsule.
