Banded Argiope captures Paper Wasp - Argiope trifasciata - female

Banded Argiope captures Paper Wasp - Argiope trifasciata - Female
Alviso EEC, Santa Clara County, California, USA
September 4, 2018
While observing wasps, bees, flies and spiders in the butterfly garden at Alviso EEC, I happened to see a European Paper Wasp blunder into the web of a Banded Argiope. The spider did not hesitate -- she seemed to dance across the web and in less than a second was using her front legs to spin the wasp while engulfing it in a whole sheet of filaments.

Shot #1: I needed 2-3 seconds to get my camera on the action, by which time the wasp was already completely and permanently immobilized; however, the wrapping would continue for another two minutes.

Ironically, this same spider would die 11 days later in the clutches of another Euro Paper Wasp and, coincidentally, I would be there to witness that event, too.
