Genus Eupeodes
Too small to be
Scaeva pyrastri
so next best choice is
Genus Eupeodes
. It may be a female
Eupeodes volucris
although it is a bit small for that species as well; please wait for an expert to confirm or dispute or provide additional insight.

I think my size estimate was way off
It doesn't make sense it could be that small, and I have more than one fairly good shots of this fly in flight. That would be pretty hard for something 4 to 5mm! 8mm seems more likely, which is close to the size of Eupeodes volucris
