Red & Yellow wasp - Polistes bellicosus - male

Red & Yellow wasp - Polistes bellicosus - Male
Lake Corpus Christi, San Patricio County, Texas, USA
November 29, 2007
Resembles a paper wasp, but could not find a match in the bugguide photos. Help to ID, please.

P. bellicosus
I occasionally find P. bellicosus that have spots on T2 in eastern Texas. It is not common though.

Moved from Polistes.

Polistes aurifer? (TX)
Definitely an interesting wasp. It might be P. aurifer which should have more yellow on terga 3-6, or P. bellicosus but the yellow spots on tergum 2 are very unusual for that species. The pale antennae eliminate P. fuscatus. Yellow spots on T2 eliminate P. dorsalis. Not enough yellow for P. apachus.

well,
it is a male polistes wasp. could it be an oddly colored P. fuscatus? i'm realy not sure.
