P. bellicosus
I occasionally find P. bellicosus that have spots on T2 in eastern Texas. It is not common though.
Moved from Polistes.

Polistes aurifer? (TX)
Definitely an interesting wasp. It might be P. aurifer which should have more yellow on terga 3-6, or P. bellicosus but the yellow spots on tergum 2 are very unusual for that species. The pale antennae eliminate P. fuscatus. Yellow spots on T2 eliminate P. dorsalis. Not enough yellow for P. apachus.
