Size: 2 cm
Several of these large black beetles were observed on the side of a weathered farm shed.

You can make out the two small occelli
between the eyes, a sure sign of Hymenoptera.

Blue mud daubers.
These are blue mud daubers, Chalybion californicum. Males are known to congregate in large "sleeping clusters," and I'm sure that is what you were observing.
