It seems clear that this is a Melitara species. There are no pictures of Melitara Texana on either BugGuide or MPG. The description on BOLD says the species is found in south Texas and adjacent Mexico and it's Larvae feed on Optunia lindheimeri. My citing is on the Edwards Plateau in south Central Texas, about 150 miles from the border with Mexico. We have a lot of Optunia lindhiemeri, which is our native Prickly Pear cactus. There is one spreadwing photo on BOLD which seems like a reasonable match to my specimen.

Hal, I believe this is M. doddalis. Steve Nanz is reviewing M. dentata and M. doddalis. The experts have not decided which it is yet from the ones I have sent to BOLD.

Interesting. M. doddalis doe
Interesting. M. doddalis doesn't appear on BugGuide at all and there's only 1 photo on MPG. I'm glad you spotted it. Please let me know what else you find out.

Thanks,

Hal

Hi Hal,

I am aware of what you are saying. My opinion comes from comparing my DNA to the ONLY M. doddalis on BOLD and they type species was from Kerrville, I think.

Only time will tell.
