white larva, red oak bark

white larva, red oak bark
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
March 26, 2008
Size: about 6 mm
As I recall, this larva was in, not under, the bark of a 2-3-years-dead red oak I cut down. It was just one of several unknown larvae I discovered by stripping bark from the toppled trunk. If I am correct that this guy was in the bark layer, then only the happenstance fracturing of the bark where he was holed up would have revealed him. It is not a very active larva but does appear to be equipped with two eye spots on each side of the head so it must react to light. Maybe it was just stunned into inaction by the bright lights of my light arena. I'm not altogether certain this is a bee*tle larva.

Uncluttering ID request
Jim: how about making a decision about this and other related images? They are at the very end of ID request and it would help to do some housecleaning.
