Mutillid sp - Dasymutilla archboldi - female

Mutillid sp - Dasymutilla archboldi - Female
Highlands, Highlands County, Florida, USA
March 21, 2008
Size: 6mm
This is a small Mutillid that I found in xeric sand-scrub consisting of oak and palmetto in Highlands County north of Okechobee. I don't know what genus or subfamily that it is in. My hope is that it's not something you see every day.

Dasymutilla sp.
The genus is Dasymutilla. I'm going to say D. archboldi due to the bulging eyes, golden pubescence on the head, narrow scutellar scale, along with a few other characters.

The holotype and most paratypes of this species were found in Highlands County as well.

I concur
I agree with George's ID. Great detail on these pictures!

Thanks!
They were really common in the place I was. I just happened to look down and realize the "ant" was a bit too big and hairy! I managed to get a couple of them using an aspirator
