rough black teneb - Cibdelis

rough black teneb - Cibdelis
Cool, El Dorado County, California, USA
December 26, 2007
Size: about 14 mm
This species was abundant in and under rotting oak logs, both in Cool and in Fair Oaks, California and was often bunched together with other teneb species. Like many darkling beetles, these release defensive chemicals when handled. While the smell of some species I find not disagreeable, this one's aroma is rather unpleasant and the taste even worse. Wash hands thoroughly before breaking for lunch amid your beetle collecting!
