rather than cropping
you can use your software to reduce the size of the original photo to fit within the BG guidelines. If that's not possible or if the resulting photos are too small to show the relevant details, submit all the cropped photos needed within the same post. Otherwise, no one but you will know they're related.

linking
you need to link the new photo to the original. There should be a link available to you on the page to do that when you're logged in. Here are the instructions from the Help tab:

How can I link images that were submitted separately?

Simply tag each image and then click "link" below the tagged images that appear to the left of the page. "Link" only appears when all tagged images were submitted by the same contributor.

Only images of the same specimen or group of specimens should be linked together.
