Hesperorhipis albofasciata - male

Hesperorhipis albofasciata - Male
Tulare, Tulare County, California, USA
Size: 4.2 mm
Emerged v.1976 from Juglans sp. coll. spring 1975 by Andrews & Westcott (det. R.L.Westcott).

As with related genera, only the males exhibit the highly modified (pectinate) antennae. Hesperorhipis is distinguished from related genera by the quadrate pronotum and abbreviated elytra (Trichinorhipis has the pronotum rounded and elytra entire) and its distinctly triangular metacoxal plate (subparallel in Xenorhipis). Four species are known, occurring in Arizona and California.

I would never have guessed
it was a buprestid. Quite a departure from the impression I've had of what a bup should look like.
