Wavy-lined Emerald caterpillar - Synchlora aerata

Wavy-lined Emerald caterpillar - Synchlora aerata
Chase Lake, Chase County, Kansas, USA
August 15, 2019
My favorite caterpillar of the year. I can't tell if the dark brown "flanges" down its back are part of its skin or glued on somehow. The white oval on its left side is a piece of the white flower it was feeding on. If this is acquired by the caterpillar when fresh, and eventually turns brown, this could account for the flanges. Or it could just be passing petal debris. Found in healthy tallgrass prairie on the edge of the flint hills of Southeast Kansas.

So they do what I guessed!
Using flower petals as camo. Outstanding!
