Very nice
I admire these UW-Madison automontage images. If I had the time, I'd love to put images from my university's collection on bugguide. As a nerdy observation-question: are you using four source lights on styrofoam cup cut in half? When we take images for Antweb.org we use only two light sources.
Thanks.

Thanks Brendon.

A while back I posted images of the setup here.

Currently I'm using dual Schott Ace fiber optic light sources. As in the pics the light sources are generally pointing horizontally or nearly so. They are always cranked to max power and the fiber optic ends are as far from the specimen as I can get them (generally). The arms of the first light source are pointed directly at the face and butt. The arms of the second light source are pointed either directly perpendicular to those (straight at sides) or slightly rotated (left humerus/right elytral apex) depending on specimen and what I am trying to illuminate. I use a velum paper cylinder to diffuse the light.

For recent images I have been averaging 35-40 slices/stack, 15-20 for stuff with less depth. I save the image stacks and montage them with CombineZP . I find this software easy to use and think it produces images superior than those produced by the Syncroscopy software. Let me know if you are using this software and if you want to know how I use it. See these links for additional montage software alternatives:

The setup is never the same. I always make adjustments (light angle, exposure, etc.) for each specimen/view. I probably spend way too much time playing and trying to get the optimal lighting condition.

I hope this helps. If you have additional ?s, please don't hesitate to ask.
