This bug was perched on a cluster of Crucita flowers, and after I took this photo, he stretched out, possibly to appear even more like a twig.

Looks like
Arizona Unicorn Mantis (Pseudovates arizonae)

but I suppose there is a small chance that it is this one instead.

 
conventional wisdom
The info pages for the two unicorn mantids claim that the two do not overlap in range, meaning anything in Arizona should be a Pseudovates, and in the LRGV (like this one) a Phyllovates. Unless somebody has hard evidence to the contrary...
