Dark heleomyzid? - Rachispoda

Dark heleomyzid? - Rachispoda
Presidio, Dragonfly Creek, San Francisco County, California, USA
October 1, 2019
Size: ca 3 mm
Caught in Malaise trap 28 Sep - 5 Oct 2019. This one has a strange appearance to my eyes, but eventually keyed it to Heleomyzidae, which looks reasonable?

Thanks John! The swollen first tarsomere on the hind leg is glaringly obvious now that you mention it! Thanks for the ID and info.

Sphaeroceridae
This is Leptocera or possibly Rachispoda in subfamily Limosininae. Family Sphaeroceridae is likely embedded within the family Heleomyzidae but entomologists haven't decided what to do with that annoying fact.
