P. californicus male - Philotarsus californicus - male

P. californicus male - Philotarsus californicus - Male
Presidio, Dragonfly Creek, San Francisco County, California, USA
June 30, 2019
Size: 2.0 mm
Caught in Malaise trap 27 June - 4 July 2019. Seven males and one female in this sample, I photographed this male and believe this is the correct species. The Bay Area appears to be an area of sympatry for Philotarsus californicus and Philotarsus kwakiutl, but the males in this sample all seem to have epiprocts widest distal to middle and the female has a heavily pigmented wing.

In Mockford's "Species of Philotarsus from north and middle America and a new philotarsine genus from Mexico, Guatemala and the Greater Antilles", Journal of the New York Entomological Society 114(3): 108-139, 2007 .. p. 115: P. californicus " Differing from P. Kwakiutl in haing a conspicuous pigmentation pattern of forewing, also in male characters of epiproct being widest distal to middle rather than in middle..."
