Scorpionfly
Hi Ken,

FYI, I contacted the Florida State Collection of Arthropods at UF Gainesville, about this specimen. Lou Somma, a Biological Scientist III & Research Associate, made an identification of it as Panorpa rufa:

"Hi Lyle and Greg,

This is a fine example of Panorpa rufa, the Red Scorpionfly; a close relative of P. floridana. This Fall/Winter-active beast seems to be endemic to sandy habitat esp. with wiregrass present, yet little is truly known about them. I know people who have collected them by sweeping wiregrass, in which they are cryptic. (P. floridana prefers damper mesic areas (esp. seepages and streams), and cryptically stays down along the base of plant stems.)

FSCA would be very pleased to add this to our collection along with any good label data.

Cheers!

Lou"
