brown fly with white face - Hydrophoria lancifer

brown fly with white face - Hydrophoria lancifer
Cardinal Marsh, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 16, 2019
Size: ~7 mm
I'm pretty sure this fly belongs in the Muscoidea Superfamily, maybe even among the root-maggot flies, since it looks similar to a root-maggot fly that was identified in the possibly Hydrophoria or Zaphne category.

Hydrophoria lancifer
Thanks so much for identifying this fly to Hydrophoria lancifer, John! I'm glad I had enough details in the photos to take this fly down to species.
