Finally getting back to this one -
After doing some comparisons, I find that the shape is that of pupae of
Pontia protodice & occidentalis
(but they vary in color), and only the first should be in this location. This is not
Pieris
,
Pontia beckeri
, nor
P. sisymbrii
.

Checkered White Chrysalis
That sure looks right.
Here's
a comparison image. There are a bunch of white butterflies, probably checkered whites, but I can't ever seem to capture them with just my camera down there in the desert. I'll have to take a net next time.

most likely Pieris or Pontia
I'm not familiar enough with them all to tell the species, but it is the pupa of a White or Cabbage Butterfly in the Pieris group of genera. Location might make Pontia protodice a probable candidate.
